I am a practicing geriatrician at the University of Pennsylvania and a Christian. Working in the hospital, office and nursing home setting I am involved in end of life care and conversations on a daily basis. I have recognized for a long time about the emptiness of the traditional science based approach to end of life care that seemed so mechanical. Reading this book blew my mind. What I love about this book is the very systematic, thorough and thoughtful approach to all the things that the typical physician will miss by focusing on just the medical care. And as I read it, it made me think about all the opportunities I have had (and missed) to accomplish things much more significant than traditional medical goals. For Christian physicians, this is a well thought out book that just makes sense. It's like seeing in color. For the non Christian physician, I think it helps cross culture gaps that may be difficult to cross otherwise. It gives a way for a non Christian physician to help a Christian patient be true to their faith by communicating more sensitively and understanding what Christians may think about end of life care. (It certainly presents an alternative to the image of the pro life patient always wanting "everything done.") For older adults, it is a gentle way to think about a difficult subject. For children of older adults, it presents a way to love their parents when they might not know how.I have to say, this is now one of my favorite books. I've been recommending it to nearly everyone.

This book raises important issues to consider as we grow closer to the end of life than its beginning, or as we care for elderly parents. Dr. Dunlop speaks from wisdom gained by experience as well as his study of scripture. Our culture prefers to avoid thinking of death and dying, but it is critical to face these issues if we want to have closure for ourselves or our families, and if we hope to die at home and in peace rather than in a hospital or nursing home. We won't all have that option, but good preparation and communication can increase our chances of dying well. This book can help with that.

Finishing Well to the Glory of God is a wonderful, beautiful, outstanding book. Dr. Dunlop offers nine strategies for finishing well beginning with #1 Live Well and #2 Let Go Graciously to #8 Switching Gears from Cure to Comfort Care and #9 Rest in Jesus. Every chapter (strategy) is thought provoking and instructive. Biblical teaching runs throughout helping the reader understand the Christian perspective on each subject. Each chapter ends with a beautiful prayer and meditation. Strategy #7 Make Appropriate Use of Technology details the medical choices we face today. In addition appendix 2 offers Examples of Technology. The biblical teaching on God’s love, suffering, life and death defines the heart and soul of the Christian faith and will deepen the walk of every reader who digests these teachings. This is a valuable book to be studied, thought about, discussed, read and reread. Finishing Well is a unique and excellent guide that will help Christians live well and finish well to the glory of God.

This book is not the best read ever, but how could it be given the unsavory but universally applicable topic. This book was very useful for me and my mother, having read it just months before my father's death. It gave us the courage to take his end of life issues by the horns and deal with them in a knowledgable and thought out fashion, instead of being consumed by our emotions of losing him.The author deals with issues as getting older, valuing end of life, recognizing strategies for coping with end of life (both for the one dying and those supporting). It is clear that he has had much experience and his perspective from a Christian standpoint was particularly useful for me and my mother. I highly recommend this book...it will eventually serve us all!

This book helped me out a great deal in trying to understand decision making for a relative that is dying. After reading, I no longer feel like a bad person for the decisions that were made. It has also helped me to know what I will need to do when my time comes. Great reading.

Very good. The wife and I read and discussed it together, found it most profitable and has stirred us to change some things. I have now given copies away to two folks and have one more to give away.I thought about downrating it because of poor editing but you know what? It just had too much good information and prompts too much good discussion!

This book, written by a Christian Geraitrics (sp?) Physician, is easy to read, very informative, and an excellent resource! This doctor has designed a plan to help those of us who are aging, have aging parents, or family members. The book outlines step to take in areas including healthcare decisions , legal matters (wills, advanced directives, etc.), living arrangements, and end of life matters. All the case studies (gleaned from his many years as a doctor) make the book especially interesting and revealing of common attitudes and fears we each might have as we age! Valuable Tesource!!

I'll start out by admitting that the author is my cousin and so I am undoubtedly biased in his favor. John takes his work and his faith very, very seriously and this book makes that very clear. We used John's material (before it was published) in a Sunday School class of very mixed ages and it was an outstanding resource. In our society, we ignore thoughts of our own deaths or of our loved ones dying until we are in crisis. John encourages us to see death and dying as a reality that needs to be anticipated, thought through, and planned for. Anyone who knows anyone who is going to die someday should read this book.
