Trespassers Will Be Baptized: The Unordained Memoir of a Preacher's Daughter, by Elizabeth Emerson Hancock

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. "Daddy had a sermon voice and an at-home voice; his church smiles and his at-home grins; his damnation-from-above tone, and his damnation-on-whoever-flooded-the-bathroom-floor-trying-to-play-Olympics tone," writes first-time author Hancock in this beautifully crafted and downright funny memoir about growing up a Southern Baptist pastor's daughter in Kentucky. Hancock's voice is a real find, managing both spirituality and irreverence in her account of family and flock. Parishioners jostling for her father's attention are particularly skewered; on the competition among church ladies to prove themselves the most charitable: "Yes, Jesus was dirt poor... But this does not take away from the fact that if you really want to show that you love someone, you have to give them things." While her father is the focus, Hancock gives much time to nuanced, loving observation of her mother, sister and other family members, achieving unexpected depth in the ongoing narrative of her grandmother's long illness. A true gem of a memoir, this will resonate with anyone who grew up in a religious and/or Southern family. Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

From Booklist

As this winning memoir makes clear, preachers’ kids aren’t like anybody else, ditto their upbringing, especially if they’re Baptist preachers’ children. In true preacher’s kid fashion, east-central Kentucky preacher’s kid Hancock divides the book into nine “lessons” on, respectively, kindness, gentleness, love, faithfulness, goodness, patience, joy, peace, and self-control. Sans hidden secrets, ugly abuses, and any Mommie or Daddy Dearest, this is a mostly sunny volume of happy memories, in which Kentucky basketball is almost as important as Jesus. Still, Hancock has a sly sense of subtle humor and ironic wit. Tension, when it does emerge, is a result of small misunderstandings and slightly mischievous behavior by her and her younger sister, Meg. Of course, there are dark moments recorded, such as the death of a grandmother, but the spirits of Christian goodness and a young girl at times confused about her father’s profession yet full of pride about it suffuse what is in toto a lovely book. --June Sawyers

I picked this book off a display at a local bookstore, mainly because the cover art looked interesting. I thumbed through the first few pages out of curiosity. As you might guess from my screenname, I'm not the kind of guy who normally would read a female coming-of-age memoir, but the first several pages had me chuckling out loud, so I bought it.In the end, it turned out not to be a female coming-of-age memoir, so much as it is a tale of any child's struggles with keeping faith, not only in religion, but in humanity. It captures perfectly the ripping away of the veil that usually occurs around age ten, when one realizes that adults aren't the superhuman beings we've imagined them to be, and that the line between childhood and "grown up" is often fuzzier than one imagined. While there are plenty of allusions to church politics and the changing nature of the Southern Baptist Church during the 1980s (about which I knew little other than conjecture), the main vehicle for the book is the touching tale of Hancock's comatose grandmother, whose deteriorating sends the book hurtling toward its conclusion, leaving Hancock and the reader with the realization that the grown-up worldEven setting aside the overall theme, the book is well-written, entertaining, and almost guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.

Hilarious and heart wrenching at times, this memoir of a "PK" is a lovely read. I could not read it after my husband had gone to sleep for fear of hitting a part so funny that I might disturb him with howling laughter. But, some parts also brought me to tears. Do yourself a favor and read this book.

I ordered two copies of this book by mistake, but I'm sure glad I did! I immediately started one copy and quickly gave the other to my Mother. We both finished and thought of two more people who "had" to read it! I'm not sure where either copy is right now, but I know whomever has it, that person is having a big laugh out loud time! This book brought back some of my fondest childhood memories growing up in a Southern Baptist Church.

This book was amusing but had an undertone of denigration . It perhaps was so honest that it made public some hurtful observations that were unfair to well-motivated churchgoers. I enjoyed seeing how situations appeared to,and were perceived by, a child. The author certainly has a way with words.

Well written and inciteful - especially in the context of a child's experience. This read warms a father's heart - even if the father is not a pastor but an average church-goer.

My local library was flooded this summer, losing most of the collection--this book was one of those lost. I was really excited to read this book, so broke down and ordered it. As a pastor's daughter myself, I expected I'd find her take on being a "PK" relatable and amusing. Unfortunately, the fact that she's a pastor's daughter FROM THE SOUTH takes over everything else. You're Southern. We get it. I found myself continually annoyed at the colloquial language she uses; by about the third page, it's getting old. It may be cute initially, which I think was her intent, but in no time it starts to feel contrived. I found her writing style to be really distracting from the content. I believe she has a good story to tell--all PK's do!--but I couldn't make it that far.

Elizabeth Emerson Hancock apparently has some issues with her Southern Baptist upbringing. I picked this up randomly at the library, amused by the title. She tells of her entrepreneurial childhood; during the family yard sale, she offered to baptized all comers in the family pool. Cute. I hoped for some more good stories. The blurbs on the back cover promise "laugh-out-loud funny and touching at the same time" and "hilarious and touching in turn." I can say Trespassers Will Be Baptized is mildly amusing and sometimes a little touching, but not much more than that. I think I may be the wrong audience, anyway. Perhaps she's aiming for the middle-aged to older female reader.Hancock distances herself from her Southern Baptist roots, with criticism a little too biting. Her experience in rural Kentucky perhaps tainted her view. I know plenty of Southern Baptists who are intelligent, cultured, and theologically wise. I wonder if her criticisms of Southern Baptists as dumb, moralistic, and simplistic might show her classism against the South, now that she is a Harvard educated east coast lawyer.I guess I was really more bored than offended by her stories. Whatever the case, I was more than ready to be through with this book.
