Too often, science fiction focuses on action and plot to the exclusion of characterization, effective use of the language, and a realistic presentation of scientific realities. Brandon Morris, in his four-novel series The Enceladus Mission, The Titan Probe, The Io Encounter, and Return to Enceladus commits none of these sins. His writing style affords adequate description and is clear, grammatically and syntactically correct, and smooth-flowing. He blends plot development and action sequences with convincing presentation of the inner states and motivations of his characters. But his forte is the science. His depiction of the conditions in space –weightlessness, mass, nausea, time and velocity, privacy and the entire social milieu, logistical mathematics, pressure, and precise details of what’s necessary (including diapers!) to face these and the many other challenging conditions one would encounter in extended space flight seem accurate and compelling to this English major. His descriptions of Enceladus, Titan, and Io are highly-informed and based on the fullest information we have about these moons and their planets, so much so that in a recent planetarium visit I was able to ask informed questions. If your preference is for real science fiction, well-and–believably presented, you should read this series.
This is the third installment on this series and is the best so far. The author seems to know a lot about thepalces we travel to, but his conjectures about space craft are lame.Happily the characters are well written enough to keep you turning the pages.
Not as good as titan and Enceladus. But the characters gain more depth and their relationships become the main thrust of this novel. Still very interesting
great sci fi series of hard science fiction
An entertaining story not so far in the future.
This was a great series. I usually don’t like books that are not free standing stories. But, I read the first, the second, and now the third. You will love them. I promise.
Well written and mostly believable. The author makes you think about the small issues not just the major ones. Looking forward the next book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this segment of the Ice Moon series. Brandon Morris (the author) demonstrates a firm grasp of the physics of these worlds and blends it with a flair for humorous and touching interactions among the crew of the International Life Search Expedition. Definitely recommend this.
