Review
"A binding religious text, a historical document of the first importance, and a work of great literary imagination." --Edward Hirsch, New York Times Book Review"Fox's translation has the rare virtue of making constantly visible in English the Hebraic quality of the original, challenging preconceptions of what the Bible is really like. A bracing protest against the bland modernity of all the recent English versions of the Bible." --Robert Alter, professor of comparative literature, University of California, Berkeley"No serious Bible reader--whether Jewish, Christian, or secular--can afford to ignore this volume." --Jon D. Levenson, Harvard Divinity School

BRILLIANT and thoughtful translation of the first 5 books of the Bible by perhaps the greatest living scholar of the Old Testament of our time. If you're thinking about getting it, if you're interested in reading the Five Books of Moses as the writers probably intended the words to be written, without all the incorrect and political translations that have become accepted over the years, you have to read this. It's beautiful, genius and a whole new look at these books, which are the source of so much of Western culture.
Beautiful translation in the Prose format as the Hebrew was originally written in that linguistic form as well. A sufficient volumn of informative appendixes introducing chapter subject matter. I bought it BRAND NEW NEVER USED rom Amazon alternative sellers for $8. for a $50 text! I arrived from NY in about 4 days. This is a very scholarly production but it DOES NOT contain the Hebrew script which many of my other Biblical texts do. I knew this going into it. Everett Fox is a renowned Jewish scholar and translated this absent of any Rabbinical theological considerations which is what I wanted. I also obtained the EARLY PROPHETS from the same author BRAND NEW for alternative seller on Amazon but paid $18 for it. Well worth twice the money.
This book seems to lean towards a literal rather than literary translation, which I prefer for a work of such importance. Given that perfect translation is impossible, the reader benefits from a balance between preserving the the meaning and the music of the original language. The reader should be made to do some amount of work to understand the cultural context of the original language, rather than be presented with something which seems contemporary but is not.
This volume is a accurate translation of Biblical Hebrew. The introductions to the various sections of the Torah are informative and provide insights to history surrounding the narrative. Fox doesn't just translate the Scriptures he provides his references for why he chooses the meanings he chooses. It is a wonderful academic translation stripped bare of theology. A welcome addition to any library.
I purchased this edition of the Chumash after reading about the Buber/Rosenzweig effort to translate the Bible more accurately from the original Hebrew into German. Fox does the same thing translating the 5 books of Torah into English. It is unquestionably the best English translation I've seen - holding true to the original meaning of the Hebrew text. Fox's commentaries are also appropriate and well written. I highly recommend this version to any serious Bible student.
For a translation that attempts to more faithfully render the original Hebrew into English, it is odd, and disappointing, that this volume does not include the Hebrew text on facing pages, so that those of us with even a cursory ability to read Hebrew could see for ourselves what Fox has done without trying to reconcile pagination of different texts.
How many people have actually read the bible? While many describe this text as the most important work of western civilization, too many people find it both impenetrable and poorly written. That is not the fault of the actual text; indeed the Hebrew poetry of the bible is among some of the best ever written. The problem lies instead in the translation. Myriad efforts at popular translations have been made, from putting the bible into common English to straight line-by-line English. While these methods render the text more easily read, they also cost it the poetic language and much of its drama.Everett Fox has solved these problems with a translation that is nothing short of masterful. The language is lucid, the prose poetic, and the story intact. Moreover, Fox is an honest translator, detailing his decisions and pointing out where multiple meaning exist. I have read literally dozens of translations of the bible. In my opinion, this is far and away the best.Fox's contribution to the text will surely be remember and appreciated both now and for decades to come.
